Pakistan Clarifies Pest Risk Analysis Needed before U.S. Grain Sorghum May Be Imported

The North American Export Grain Association (NAEGA) informs its members that the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is advising against any shipment of grain sorghum to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan until Pakistan’s Department of Plant Protection (DPP) is able to complete a pest risk analysis (PRA).

Following an industry-instigated, APHIS inquiry about the status of market access for US sorghum, Pakistan’s DPP issued a request for APHIS to complete a PRA form (attached). Certification for sorghum to Pakistan has never previously been provided.

APHIS is currently in the process of completing the PRA form and may request support from industry to ensure the accuracy of its responses. Until the PRA is completed, APHIS will not be able to certify sorghum grain to Pakistan.
